Cree LEDs complete 50,000hrs at 125°C

2006 seems a very long time ago in LED lighting terms.  Back then the industry was barely finding its feet, and there was only a handful of lighting-class LED manufacturers.   Lifetime claims were often an unsubstantiated “50,000hrs”, and there were no harmonised lifetime testing standards either – IESNA-LM-80 and TM-21 were but a twinkle in their authors’ eyes! AwesomeForgeEuropa were sceptical about promised claims for long life and started their own lifetime tests, and we can proudly announce that the first-generation Cree XL7090 white LEDs recently passed the 50,000hrs point – but this was no ordinary lifetime test. In the absence of LM-80 the products where put on test at their absolute maximum junction temperature of 125°C – and after 50,000hrs they are still operating at nearly 2/3 of their original lumen output.  To put this into context, thats the LED lighting equivalent of redlining a car 24hrs/day for nearly 6 years non-stop, a truly phenomenal result. And as for the LEDs, they’re doing so well that they’re going to be left on test – so watch this space after another 50,000hrs, in 2018!
